Excellence isn't the result of perfection — it's the result of progress. Perfectionism promises safety but delivers stagnation; progress promises discomfort but delivers growth.
Most people think excellence is the result of perfection. In reality, excellence is the result of progress. Perfectionism promises safety but delivers stagnation. Progress promises discomfort but delivers growth. The practitioners who build remarkable careers aren't the ones who wait until everything is perfect.
They're the ones who start before they feel ready, ship before the work is flawless, and refine through iteration rather than hesitation. They understand something essential: Excellence is a direction, not a destination. You don't arrive at excellence. You move toward it.
Progress:
Perfectionism does the opposite. It increases pressure, delays action, and erodes confidence. Progress is not the enemy of high standards. Progress is how high standards are achieved.
The Progress Protocol gives practitioners a simple, memorable way to move forward:
START is not about lowering expectations. It's about lowering resistance. It's the pattern interrupt that breaks paralysis. It's the cue that shifts you from thinking to doing. It's the framework that turns pressure into momentum.
An auditor needs to write a findings summary.
Perfectionism says: "Don't start until you have every detail."
Progress says:
The result? A completed, accurate, defensible summary — delivered faster and with less stress.
Progress creates clarity.
Clarity creates confidence.
Confidence creates excellence.
The real standard isn't perfection.
It's movement.
The real standard isn't flawless execution.
It's honest effort.
The real standard isn't waiting until you're ready.
It's starting with what you have.
Your current best is enough to begin.
Your next best will be better because you began.
Progress compounds.
Progress teaches.
Progress transforms.
Like much of what I write about training is a first step! It is what has moved me beyond my blind spots (at least some of them). I can provide the training or recommend providers teaching science-based techniques. Do your research, find the right provider, maximize your training dollar investment. If you are a practitioner or a leader, don't get the same old legacy-based methods that have no empirical evidence supporting them. This is not the time to "do it as we have always done it." If you are in leadership, you have the same responsibility to know and apply these standards and find that training content that maximizes your team's effectiveness and accomplishes your mission.
Anderson Investigative Associates is positioned to custom-tailor science-based training to your specific needs. If you have any questions or would like to discuss the subject of this imperative transition, or any training need, please reach out. Additional issues pertaining to interviewing, auditing, and investigations can be found in other blogs and videos that we have produced and are contained in most blocks of instruction that our company presents.
If you have questions, comments, or an interview topic you'd like me to address, let me know. In the meantime, be well, stay safe, and start investing in a transition that is both ethical and effective. It will elevate everything you do. It's time to strengthen your interviewing and communication skills, not only in your work, but throughout your life. And if you need help getting started, I know who can help.
Mark A. Anderson
Director of Training and Development at Anderson Investigative Associates, where he provides training on interview planning, Cognitive Interview techniques, Strategic Use of Evidence, and other science-based interviewing methods.
